Every so often my good friends who like to develop reasons for going to war will discuss the concept of the "pre-emptive strike." The "bad guy" is planning an attack, (presumably according to infallible information received by a reliable government which never would lie or mislead its citizens), and thus it is moral for "the good guy" to strike first as an act of self defense. I always wonder what if the alleged incipient attack prepared by the "bad guy" might in fact have been for its own pre-emptive strike in anticipation of the attack which in fact was carried out against it by the "good guy." In other words, if all nation states used this concept we would see not only arms races but endless cycles of pre-emptive strikes pre-empting each others' pre-emptive strikes. Since the US has stated convincingly that it intends to attack Iraq, would Iraq be justified in attacking the US ASAP if it could?
That being said, what I am really writing about is the sad news from Fort Bragg. Four special forces type soldiers, three of whom are Afghanistan combat veterans, have murdered their wives. Two subsequently shot themselves. What evil energy have they brought home? Anyway, toda's news is that the wife of another special ops officer shot him in his sleep. I wonder if she will be using the pre-emptive strike concept as her defense?
